Education Needs Uniter’s, Not Dividers…

This past Wednesday night was the first presidential debate on the Republican side. As eight hopeful candidates stood on stage, I realized that each one was trying their best to bring the Republican party together. However, with so many different viewpoints and agendas, a disconnect is what we saw most. However, one item they all agreed upon was to get rid of the Department of Education…

Segue to education needs, especially educational leadership…
In a world where division and discord are around every corner, education should not be one of the areas where either is found.

True, quality leaders understand that their role extends beyond personal gain, hence the reason for being in education to begin with. Education needs leadership that fosters unity, collaboration and shared progress. The bottom line is the distinction in their approach – education needs leadership that are uniters and not dividers.

Uniters provide a transformational style of leadership that paves the way for growth, innovation, and an environment of harmony where everyone can thrive. Leaders who put unity first can offset issues that may be trivial at best. A different mindset or approach to problems does not exploit differences. Sometimes, acknowledging those unique perspectives on problems creates that uniting environment. When leaders actively seek out diverse thinking, they create a platform for inclusive decision-making, resulting in more well-rounded solutions. However, not doing this takes little time to see when dividers are present.

Uniting creates a sense of belonging and ownership, intrinsically motivating individuals to invest in it. You want leadership success? Give people a reason to want to belong. That’s uniting.

Leadership dividers ignore disagreements and avoid difficult conversations. The impact of their leadership does not extend beyond themselves. They do not inspire others, creating a ripple effect that festers and spreads like a disease. In contrast, a leadership uniter leads by example, demonstrating uniting values and behaviors they expect from others. They plant and cultivate a culture of respect, empathy, and collaboration. Success partners with collective achievement and uniting occurs when this comes to fruition.

Go be a great educator and leader today… Our future needs it…

H.O.P.E. – Help One Person Everyday

This past Friday, at our weekly Civitan meeting, one of our guest speakers spoke and, while speaking, used the acrostic H.O.P.E. for Help One Person Everyday.

When he said that, my leadership radar immediately went off, and I knew I could somehow get that in a blog. So, here we go…

If we dig into the word “hope,” we find that it comes from the old English “hopian,” which means a positive expectation. To me, it sounds like “hope in,” which is what we do when we hope. We place our hope in someone, something that changes the way we want an outcome; for ourselves or others.

If everything is working nicely, hope is really not in the conversation. However, we use hope to navigate for a specific outcome when challenges appear. I believe hope goes along with transformational leadership. Many times in leadership, we want hope for ourselves. That’s not a bad thing, per se. We hope this happens or does not happens. But when we truly serve with transformational leadership, we also hope for others. We create an inspiration that transcends into many facets of authenticity.

In leadership, our role should be to help others, and we should do that every day. I see too many leaders using others instead of helping. I see too many leaders who put themselves first instead of others. I see… you get the idea. When we help one person everyday, we acknowledge and give value to a belief of greater good.

H.O.P.E. works in all areas of leadership. It also works in education. That is what school leaders and teachers should do. We have buildings and classrooms full of students. Many students who need help, not only in the curriculum of the subject but in finding value in themselves. As educational leaders, we can do that. So many students go all day without being acknowledged. So many students need positive correction to understand that they can have value. This is what educating the whole child is about, and it is one area I believe education is failing.

Hope is needed. H.O.P.E. is also needed. We all need hope, and we all need help. Transformational leadership works because when we help others, we help ourselves; how I wish more leaders understood this. When we help one person everyday, society gets better. Let’s be both hope and H.O.P.E. today. Go Help One Person Everyday.

Let’s go fight the good fight of leadership. Someone has to…

The Two Sides of Leadership Debt…

On the way home from school in the afternoons, I listen to talk radio. It can vary from local to national news, sports, and even money. The other day I was scanning the channels and stopped on The Dave Ramsey Show. In his intro, after a break, many times, he will say, “Welcome to the Dave Ramsey Show where debt is dumb, and cash is king.” And as usual, that got me to thinking.

Debt… to owe someone else. Most of the time, we think about debt as being related to money. However, many times I see leaders who have what I call “leadership debt.” Yes, I believe “leadership debt” is a thing, it is happening to many, and there is also another side to it.

As you look and listen, we often see transactional leadership taking place – “do this for me, and I’ll do this for you.” I believe that leadership should be a healthy mix of transformational and transactional leadership, with a higher percentage leaning toward transformational. However, when transactional leadership takes place, usually we end up owing.

It goes something like this…
“Hey, I need a favor.
     Ok, what can I do for you?
Well, I need such and such, and if you can come through for me, I will return the favor.
     When?
Well, I’m not in a position to do it now, but when I am… I will take care of you.”

It seems to me only one person in the conversation got what they wanted. The other person just sits and waits. So, who owes the debt? I guess you would probably say the person who received the favor. But… what about the person who made good on their end? What did they get? If we think about it in terms of money, they “paid” for something and did not get anything in return but a future promise, and we know how promises are kept… Ultimately, there seems to be only one winner, but do they really win? I see both parties in some form of debt isolation.

The hard part of all of this is many leaders can help others. That is one of the main characteristics of leadership – helping. Do they sometimes need favors? Sure. I do think, however, that they do not need to go around owing others on future promises, while at the same time, the ones who are “paying” need to make sure the return of their investment is healthy, but the return needs to be almost immediate. And when that leader does get to where they can repay… leadership amnesia sets in all the sudden.

I guess what I am trying to say is this… If someone asks you for a “favor,” do it because you want to, not expecting anything in return. Quit giving of yourself to make others look good for their own agenda, and they will start seeking out other weak-minded people. Be true to yourself. When you are, you will be seen as true to others. While at the same time, if you are the one always asking for favors, quit “getting” others to help you get what you want. Do it on your own merit. Yes, it might take more time, and it might cramp your style that you cannot do something you want now, but you will be seen as a much better person.

Yes, Dave Ramsey is right… debt is dumb, but it is even dumber to pay for something and receive nothing in return. As James states, “Let your ‘yes’ be yes, and your ‘no’ be no” (ESV, 2001, James 5:12).

Go be a great educator and leader today… Our future needs it…

Reasons I Do Not Want To Be A Bad Leader…

I do not know how many reasons I could list, but like you, I believe a list could go on and on…

The other day I was listening to talk radio, and the host said something about someone in a leadership position… yada, yada…

As I was listening to myself think, I began to talk to myself (Yes, I actually do that, and do not say that you do not). I asked myself why I did not “care for” that individual person’s leadership. I resonated back to this thought, which is one of many that I have stamped into my MO… “You can never separate who you are with what you say you believe in.” Your leadership is who you are, that is reality.

I say all of that to say this… I began listing out loud the reasons I do not want to be a bad leader… The hard part is knowing that some people are just not going to like you or agree with you on anything you say or do. Unfortunately, I do not have an answer for that. However, I do believe that as long as you do right by others and have a servant’s heart, the problem lies with other people and their thought process, not how you actually lead. Time is the actual test of this.

So… here is my list of reasons I do not want to be a bad leader…

Because, bad leadership…

Creates a lack of discipline in my life
Leads to more bad leadership
Never pleases, it only hurts
Creates a greater burden on others
Time spent in bad leadership is forever wasted
Always makes me less than what I could be
Causes others to suffer consequences
Steals what little, good leadership I might have
Chooses not to respect the thoughts of others
May influence others to have bad leadership
…and most of all…

Indicates that I am a lousy leader!

How can you tell if you are providing bad or good leadership? That answer is not our own, for it lies in the time past and yet to come. One idea that we need to come to grips with is to admit that end results do not always equate bad or good leadership. Just because something works out does not mean good leadership was exhibited.

So… what reason would you put on the list for why you do not want to be a bad leader? You fill in the blank… Because, bad leadership _______________.
