“The Boys in the Boat” Leadership Movie Review

Christmas Day evening, we went to the movies to see The Boys in the Boat, and I am glad we did. It was an absolutely great movie. Outside of reading the book or being an Olympic Trivia person, the story is somewhat new for many…

First, a little history… The Boys in the Boat is a book by Daniel James Brown in 2013 that tells the true story of the University of Washington’s eight-oar crew team and their quest for gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The focus is on Joe Rantz, one of the rowers, and his background, who becomes a key crew member. Also, the team’s coach, Al Ulbrickson, shows the crew members the importance of teamwork and determination. While a “David vs Goliath” sports movie, it is much more than that. It’s a historical event that exposes the impact of the Great Depression and what drives people to achieve and find value. Overcoming odds from all directions, the end result of the story is the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, where the University of Washington’s crew faces competition from other countries, including Nazi Germany’s rowing team, with Hitler watching.

As I sat there watching, I was consumed and fascinated with the leadership that takes place throughout the entire movie. Many movies will have leadership spots here and there, but Boys in the Boat, for me, had it from the beginning to the end. I highly recommend the watch.

So, here are a few takeaways that I found…

  1. Teamwork and Trust – Rowing is a sport that requires exceptional teamwork and trust among team members. There is much focus on this… Each rower must synchronize their movements perfectly with the others to achieve success. This highlights the significance of building trusting relationships and instilling a sense of unity within a team. Suppose our leadership environment does not carry this mindset. In that case, team members only trust and rely on themselves to achieve common objectives.
  2. Vision and Goal Setting – Al Ulbrickson, the coach, had key leadership qualities in his ability to understand and manage team dynamics. This is crucial in our leadership world. He had to navigate the different personalities and backgrounds of the rowers, fostering a sense of unity and camaraderie among them. He also allowed them to believe in something beyond themselves, a common goal for future accomplishments.
  3. Behind-the-scenes Leaders (I believe there are two)
    • George Pocock, who was the team’s boatbuilder. He reminded me of an old sage, providing more than just technical expertise in building crew shells. He had a deep understanding of rowing, a commitment to perfection, and an ability to inspire and motivate the rowers, tapping into the emotional components of each rower.
    • Bobby Moch, the coxswain (the guy who shouts instructions from the front of the boat). A key figure for the team, he was responsible for steering the boat, coordinating the rowers’ movements, and providing motivation and strategy during races. Moch also had a deep understanding of the personalities and capabilities of each rower. His ability to motivate and unify the team and his strategic insights during races contributed significantly to the crew’s achievements. He was a cheerleader that we all need.

All in all, it is one of the better movies I have seen in a good while. It makes you feel good coming out and walking back to the vehicle. The Boys in the Boat gives you thoughts to reflect on and the ability to see leadership that can transcend into our lives today.

Leadership & Loyalty: The Power of Who’s in Your Circle

I saw this the other day on Facebook. I’m a huge fan of the movie Tombstone, especially with Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer respectfully playing Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday.

As I looked and thought about that picture, I realized the amount of unsaid leadership in it and how it holds profound significance. True leadership isn’t about amassing a large following but cultivating a loyal and dedicated team. Large followings take up more than space.

How often have you seen leaders who amass a following because it makes them feel “large and in charge?” They believe “strength in numbers” belongs to how they manage their many minions. Their “circle” is as big as the equator and is more of a hole than being whole.

A few thoughts regarding a tight circle of loyalty…

  1. Quality over quantity – It’s about depth and substance. The smaller the circle, the stronger it is. Too many times we find others who do nothing more than take up oxygen.
  2. Loyalty breeds commitment – Being around like-minded people with kindred spirits is contagious. I love it when I see others want others to succeed in their group; why would you not? On the flip side, we see some who can’t shine the spotlight on others because they have an iron fist holding the spotlight on themselves.
  3. Mutual trust and respect – Large circle wannabe leaders demand both from others without giving it themselves. Trust and respect go both ways and foster an environment of unity. Tight circle loyalty understands the strengths and weaknesses and embraces them for success.
  4. Resilience – When adversity hits, that circle’s bond gets tight. Loyalty will never turn its back. Oh, but how many leaders do just that?
  5. Inspiring – How often do we see leaders who mandate orders and micromanage others to loyalty of fear? Inspirational leaders are models and radiate.
  6. Longevity – Stands the test of time and does not sway with the trends. Enduring success comes from loyalty within the circle, not outside it.

I showed the above picture to a friend the other day and said, “You know, my circle is getting smaller and smaller the older I get.” My friend stated, “Yes, it does.” However, I never want it to become a dot where it’s only me. But amazingly, I see many leaders who become a dot because no one wants to be in their circle.

Leadership is not a numbers game, but so many want it that way. With an entourage, they are carried on the shoulders of those who bow and cower. The thought, “It’s not about the size of the circle; it’s the loyalty in it,” captures the essence of effective leadership, ultimately achieving remarkable outcomes and leaving a lasting legacy.

Go be a great educator and leader today… Our future needs it…

“Looney Tunes” Thanksgiving Leadership…

To begin with, let me say that I am a huge Looney Tunes fan. Saturday morning, growing up, a bowl of cereal sitting in front of the TV. One solid hour of pure, free, clean comedy. The funny thing is that now as an adult, you realize how much of an adult overtone the cartoons had. Every once in a while, I’ll see one again, and I find them as funny, if not funnier than when I was a kid. I enjoyed the main characters, Buggs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Wile E. Coyote, and the Tasmanian Devil. In some way or another, I can identify with each of their personalities.

So, for today’s blog, a Looney Tunes Thanksgiving leadership theme…

For those who can remember, these episodes were called Merrie Melodies. One of the episodes was Holiday for Drumsticks, starring Daffy Duck.  If you have time for a 6:42 laugh, click to watch, Holiday for Drumsticks – Daffy Duck

Here’s the plot synopsis (taken from fandom.com)…

A hillbilly husband brings home a turkey. After shooting back at their feuding neighbor, the wife prepares some food to fatten up the turkey for Thanksgiving. The turkey is thrown into the animal pen. Daffy Duck, who happens to be one of the farm animals, is jealous of all of the food that the turkey is receiving. Once he sees a feast for the turkey, Daffy rushes to the turkey and tells him to stop eating. Daffy explains that the hillbillies want to fatten up the turkey then eat him, so Daffy says that the turkey should reduce his weight so the hillbillies won’t eat the skinny turkey.

In a montage, the turkey exercises day by day, while Daffy eats up the entire feast that was supposed to be for the turkey. On Thanksgiving Day, the turkey is now extremely slim, while Daffy is fat. Pa finds the turkey and states that it’s too bony for him to eat. However, the tables turn when Daffy brags that he is a healthy duck himself and that the hillbillies can’t eat duck for Thanksgiving. Pa finds Daffy a suitable alternative and attempts to axe and shoot him. Daffy frantically tries to lose his weight, but he nearly gets shot in all attempts. Daffy begs the turkey to save him, and the turkey hides him in various areas, before admitting that Daffy can’t be saved aside from moving to a country that doesn’t celebrate Thanksgiving. The turkey tells Daffy to take an airplane to Rio de Janeiro, which is a trick to get Daffy into the oven. However, the hillbillies are unable to cook Daffy, as Daffy keeps blowing the matches out.

So, where’s the leadership, you might be asking? How many times have we tried to help others, and it backfired? How often have we, like Daffy Duck, found ourselves having to constantly blow out the match? But… did Daffy Duck know what he was doing? The turkey even tried to trick Daffy in the end. Go figure…

Sometimes it’s a no-win situation. We have all been there before. I’m all about helping others; we should be. It should be in our nature as servant-leaders. I figure if we just do right by people, trust our instincts, and, as my grandfather said, “Make the most of whatever comes, and the least of whatever goes,” then our leadership will turn out alright. Even when it backfires…

Now, go enjoy your Thanksgiving Season with turkey or duck… Next week will be our annual Thanksgiving Thoughts.

Is There a Lost Camaraderie of Teaching?

In writing last week, I mentioned I attended the memorial of one of my mentors, Dr. Gerald Hasselman. During the memorial, I looked around and realized I was sitting in an ocean of educational greatness. More importantly, I realized that these people’s friendship and camaraderie have stayed and tested time.

Riding home, I thought about my teacher friendships that have also moved with time. Yes, these core friends will drop anything to help. I also realized that teacher friendships and relationships are becoming a “thing of the past.” I remember early on in teaching, at the end of the day, we would “hang around and visit” for a little while. Slower days, they were, I guess. 

I asked one of them the other day, “Reckon why?” As we talked, we came up with several ideas. 

Teachers…

Did not move schools as much as they do today.

Lived in the community of the school.

Went to the same church.

Children were the same age.

… and a few more I’m sure you can come up with.

More than anything else, we decided that our lives did not have the hustle and bustle they do today. There are so many “things” we are involved in with ourselves or with our families. What’s an average day going home…? Get to the bank or the cleaners before they close, run by the grocery store to pick up something for supper, get children to practice for whatever sport they are in, check/go over your children’s homework, etc. And… the best school taboos… An hour and a half faculty meeting, get home to get tomorrow’s lesson ready, grade papers, etc… Before you know it, it’s time to shower and go to bed (and don’t forget to ask how your spouse’s day went).

Now, I want to get home as quickly as anyone, but… we are losing one of our greatest educational strengths – each other. Who better understands us than other teachers? At the end of the school day, the bell rings, and we hear, “See you tomorrow.” Social media and texting have taken the place of conversations that includes the going on’s of your family, not the smack talk of gossip. Having another teacher listen and ask questions, connect mentally, provide realness, offer help, and celebrate is the camaraderie we are missing.

As the school year begins, make an effort to have camaraderie with your colleagues. There will be some you do not “click” with, and that’s ok. However, you will appreciate the social and emotional side of your well-being when you do find those with whom you do “click,” and your friendship stays intentional. 

Two more thoughts for this blog stand out as we close…

  1. For the Andy Griffith fans out there, the episode of “What’s Your Hurry” comes to mind. 
  2. For the “Toy Story” fans, with Andy and Buzz… “You’ve Got a Friend in Me.”

Both of these practiced intentionally, can be of great help.
