Leadership & Loyalty: The Power of Who’s in Your Circle

I saw this the other day on Facebook. I’m a huge fan of the movie Tombstone, especially with Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer respectfully playing Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday.

As I looked and thought about that picture, I realized the amount of unsaid leadership in it and how it holds profound significance. True leadership isn’t about amassing a large following but cultivating a loyal and dedicated team. Large followings take up more than space.

How often have you seen leaders who amass a following because it makes them feel “large and in charge?” They believe “strength in numbers” belongs to how they manage their many minions. Their “circle” is as big as the equator and is more of a hole than being whole.

A few thoughts regarding a tight circle of loyalty…

  1. Quality over quantity – It’s about depth and substance. The smaller the circle, the stronger it is. Too many times we find others who do nothing more than take up oxygen.
  2. Loyalty breeds commitment – Being around like-minded people with kindred spirits is contagious. I love it when I see others want others to succeed in their group; why would you not? On the flip side, we see some who can’t shine the spotlight on others because they have an iron fist holding the spotlight on themselves.
  3. Mutual trust and respect – Large circle wannabe leaders demand both from others without giving it themselves. Trust and respect go both ways and foster an environment of unity. Tight circle loyalty understands the strengths and weaknesses and embraces them for success.
  4. Resilience – When adversity hits, that circle’s bond gets tight. Loyalty will never turn its back. Oh, but how many leaders do just that?
  5. Inspiring – How often do we see leaders who mandate orders and micromanage others to loyalty of fear? Inspirational leaders are models and radiate.
  6. Longevity – Stands the test of time and does not sway with the trends. Enduring success comes from loyalty within the circle, not outside it.

I showed the above picture to a friend the other day and said, “You know, my circle is getting smaller and smaller the older I get.” My friend stated, “Yes, it does.” However, I never want it to become a dot where it’s only me. But amazingly, I see many leaders who become a dot because no one wants to be in their circle.

Leadership is not a numbers game, but so many want it that way. With an entourage, they are carried on the shoulders of those who bow and cower. The thought, “It’s not about the size of the circle; it’s the loyalty in it,” captures the essence of effective leadership, ultimately achieving remarkable outcomes and leaving a lasting legacy.

Go be a great educator and leader today… Our future needs it…

Dang, It’s Hot Outside…

Taking a break this week from the “leadership thoughts” per se. It’s just been too hot to almost do anything. So I decided to write about the heat. Hope you enjoy a little Friday levity…

Dang, It's Hot Outside

I feel the sun’s scorching rays,
As the air is lit ablaze.
The sun hugging me in a hot embrace.
Sweat rolling down my forehead,
Creating a cherry popsicle face.
Dang, It’s hot outside.

The sun beats down,
Sizzling the ground,
Soles of my shoes melting. 
Looking for a shade please,
For any breeze would be a tease.
Dang, It’s hot outside.

To work and sweat is one thing.
To sit and sweat is another.
Air-conditioner and fans are at full blast,
The heat index feels maxed!
And this wet-bulb global temp has everyone guessing? 
Dang, it’s hot outside.

Even at night, under the lights,
Humidity so thick,
I can cut it with a knife.
The chirps of crickets that I like to hear,
Now seem like moans of dread and fear.
Dang, it’s hot outside.

Morning brings a hot new day,
"Let the temperature rise," I say. 
Sweating a swimming pool with each step,
Getting sunburned just thinking,
Hoping I don’t die from heat accumulation. 
Dang, It’s hot outside. 

But, grin and bear it I do,
Putting on hats and frogg togg cools.
For in a few months,
My thoughts will change.
As the temps drop low,
And we wish the heat again.

But for right now...
Dang, It's hot outside!

Marginal Teachers… Not A Label You Want As An Educator!

What makes a marginal teacher? This question is loaded with beliefs and answers… I recently read that a marginal teacher is incompetent and lacks enthusiasm. Harsh descriptors of a person who has a degree to teach… ?

I also read this statement the other day, “These teachers can also have a lack of motivation and accountability for their actions.” My question is why are they labeled as such? Is this because they are disheartened, or have they become content? Both have lasting ramifications for students in their classroom and the school. 

For me, a marginal teacher knows what to do but lacks in getting it done. They just might be on the cusp of being a good teacher. However, they are just shy of doing a few things needed. What are these? It could be and probably is different for each, but there is something. However, not knowing what to do versus choosing not to do quickly separates a marginal teacher from others. One can be taught, the other… well?

I guess we can get caught up with definitions of a marginal teacher. Now, much of that depends upon how much the marginal teacher wants to grow. That will tell the difference between them actually losing the label or not. 

The marginal teacher may be more reluctant to try and improve. This is where they take on the characteristic of being content: and in terms of Rain Man (watch the movie), average sucks. Average, content, marginal… they all begin to spell the same for education. 

Just like growing students, we must grow teachers. The best way to get rid of a marginal teacher is to develop them into a good teacher. It takes time and effort. It takes mentoring, conversations, building a trusting relationship, etc. But time is of the essence. Just like a wound, marginal teachers will fester, become contagious, and we all know band-aids will not fix the problem. 

This seems to be a trend in education. Teachers who are in the classroom, binding their time, and working for the weekend. Teacher shortage is a real thing. A question I always ponder is, is a warm body in the classroom better than a nobody in the classroom?

Deep down, I believe we can grow a marginal teacher into a good/great teacher. Maybe they just lost their why. Perhaps they didn’t have a why, to begin with. Regardless, those marginal teachers are in our school buildings. Just maybe, they need to be shown why… we are educating the future. 

Let’s go fight the good fight of leadership. Someone has to…

Teacher Camaraderie – Part 2

Well, last week’s blog spurred a lot of conversation. Yes, based on feedback and small talk, teacher camaraderie is lost. I heard from veteran teachers (old heads) and the young guns. The split seemed to be about fifteen years of experience among the feedback. So, I thought I would extend our blog from last week and let us see the thoughts of others and close with my opinion of why we need to either go back and find camaraderie or start finding a way to include collegiality in our schools.

A thought from several veteran educators…
“Our schools are much more heterogenous than “then,” but our communities are not. So – the question should be, how can we develop true camaraderie among all of our teachers and not just those who reside in our comfort zone?”

“… it’s imperative to be intentional in these days and times!!!”

“Teachers have become our State/country’s salvation!! Without camaraderie with their peers, teachers will not get the tremendous intrinsic values from what they do for the children!!… Too few folks see or understand the true value of teaching, and that includes those in the profession-has been that way for a long time.”

Thoughts from the young gun teachers…
“I 100% agree!!! It’s crazy how things have changed and this is only my 13th year!!!”

“I have really never thought about it this way. None of my family is in education, and I really don’t talk to anyone about what I do every day.”

“I see how many of the older teachers always talk with each other. I guess that’s because they have been teaching with each other for so long. I hope I can find that the longer I stay in education.”

As you can see, camaraderie is a valuable commodity in education. Veteran and young teachers know what is at stake by losing or not having camaraderie. Being in education for 29 years, I have noticed that it seems the more teachers “get along,” the better the school culture will be. As one veteran teacher commented, “Is everything ‘push, push, push’ to raise test scores, or is there appropriate attention given to the climate of the school?” As I thought about that question, I wondered how many schools provide professional development for this. Would it be a good thing? Would school leaders see value in it? If we are going to create a culture conducive to growing students, then the school environment must help those (teachers) entrusted with that responsibility. What better way to do that, than to find ways to ensure that teachers have the opportunity to have camaraderie?

Yes, it takes effort from many different angles, but doesn’t most things that matter do? Let’s be intentional in finding ways to build each other up, edifying the good that others do. The world is standing in line to tear people down, teachers included. Schools should be one of the safest places for teachers to feel valued. It’s all about leadership on every level.
