In educational leadership, the power of gratitude can be profound, often transformative. We can see how this works repeatedly when teachers pour themselves into students and even when administrators pour themselves into teachers. We can all give testimony that there are times when “things” do not go our way, and it hurts, often even infuriating us. However, from a Christian leadership perspective, gratitude is more than just a mindset; it is rooted in humility and grace. When leaders acknowledge blessings in their work, they are able to approach each day with renewed purpose, compassion, and resilience. Remember, it’s a mindset!

For those in leadership, particularly in education, it’s easy to focus on challenges: limited resources, the weight of decision-making, large classroom sizes, salary inadequacies, discipline issues, managing competing needs, and juggling time for family. I am sure you can add to the list… However, a heart of gratitude can reframe these challenges as opportunities for growth. Anchoring in thankfulness can inspire by showing that gratitude isn’t dependent on circumstances, as detrimental as they might seem, it’s a reflection of a deep-seated trust in God’s provision. And what a provision we have that we, as educational leaders, are entrusted to teach the future of society.

gratitudeappreciation1-300x199

Thankful leaders also create a ripple effect throughout the school environment by keeping the culture thriving and promising. When leaders intentionally express appreciation for teachers, staff, and students, they reinforce the value of each person’s contributions. This simple act of actual, personable recognition empowers, fosters teamwork, and strengthens relationships. But please understand that recognition needs to be more than an automatically generated email telling how much you value and appreciate their efforts (we can get ChatGPT to do that…). People naturally want edification, and such encouragement goes a long way in a school setting when done with a personal touch. A culture of gratitude doesn’t just boost spirits; it creates a shared sense of purpose. When we give people a reason to belong, they will want to belong.

At its core, leading with thankfulness embodies the humility and love at the heart of Christianity. During this Thanksgiving season, it’s easy to either feel grateful or overlook gratitude; it all comes down to perspective. Thanksgiving offers an opportunity to inspire gratitude in others and to foster an environment where faith and respect guide our actions.

When educational leaders and all people, for that matter, root themselves in gratitude, they create a positive, supportive atmosphere where both teachers and students can thrive. In this way, gratitude becomes more than just a virtue; it becomes a powerful force for transformation.

As you step into your role today, remember that you are not just an educator and leader but a shaper of the future. Your actions and decisions profoundly impact the lives of those you guide. Go, be the great educator and leader that our future needs.

Remember… Think Leadership and Be For Others…

Fighting Complacency in Contentment – A Leadership Battle…

A few days ago, I was talking with a friend, and we got on the concept of contentment and how it works with __________ (You can fill in the blank with any area of life). We spoke specifically about contentment in sports and how it affects teams. Still, it can be anything… personal, family, businesses, schools, etc.

download (7)

Now, contentment is a good thing. It fosters a state of satisfaction with one’s circumstances. At the core of contentment, it creates a peaceful harmony of acceptance in the present moment. Think along the lines of gratitude and being grateful for what one has instead of constantly wanting something else that doesn’t bring any more value to your life or those around you. In this sense, contentment carries positivity, and life has meaning.

I also believe that contentment serves as a shield against comparison and envy. Think about TV and social media ads, better yet, think about other people telling you what you need… they are everywhere, telling us that we need this or that to make us happy or more happy. In a world where we are told we are not good enough, being able to celebrate one’s achievements and accomplishments creates a culture of self-fulfillment.

However… despite its merits, contentment can quickly become a deterrent and a hindrance. The word… complacency; it’s not something that you want to be associated with you in a sentence. When complacency encroaches in one’s life, it will catch you and fester. Complacency leads to losing the drive to pursue personal and team goals with growth, challenging the status quo. A comfort zone is created where there becomes a reluctance to step outside, and a barrier to progress now exists.

How does contentment and complacency work with leadership in a Christian worldview mindset… While contentment is seen as a virtue that stems from trust in God’s provision and sovereignty, complacency can be viewed negatively, implying a lack of diligence and commitment to fulfilling one’s responsibilities. Ultimately, the Christian perspective on contentment and complacency in leadership emphasizes the importance of aligning one’s values and priorities with God’s purposes while remaining open to His guidance and transformative work in both individual lives and organizations.

As we think about this idea with our leadership, we must decide what we will make of our contentment. Is it good enough that we still want to make strides for personal growth? Or, will contentment slowly become complacency, hindering most areas of our lives? Both can become a power that pulls, but only one side will tear you apart. And… how we answer this as educational leaders shapes our future more than we know.

Let’s go fight the good fight of leadership. Someone has to…

Go be a great educator and leader today… Our future needs it…

Remember… Think Leadership and Be For Others…

24/7, 365 – Christmas All The Time… Why Not?

All+Year+Long+LOGO

Here’s the “thing” I have noticed about me… The older I get, the more I pay attention to the lyrics of songs. Don’t read this and ask yourself, “Seriously?” Anyway… yes. I don’t know why, but I do. So, the other night, driving home, Christmas Time by Bryan Adams came on the radio, and for some reason, the words took on a different meaning… Look at the lyrics throughout the song…

We waited all through the year
For the day to appear
When we could be together in harmony

You know the time will come
Peace on earth for everyone
And we can live forver in a world where we are free
Let it shine for you and me

There’s something about Christmas time
Something about Christmas time
Makes you wish it was Christmas every day
To see the joy in the children’s eyes
The way that the old folks smile
Says that Christmas will never go away

We’re all as one tonight
Makes no difference if you’re black or white
‘Cause we can sing together in harmony
I know it’s not too late
The world would be a better place
If we could keep the spirit more than one day in the year
Send a message loud and clear

It’s the time of year everyone’s together
And celebrate here on Christmas day
When the ones you love are there
You can feel the magic in the air, you know it’s everywhere

There’s something about Christmas time
Please tell me Christmas will never go away

The month of November, with Thanksgiving, and the month of December, with Christmas, has a way of stirring emotions that just maybe, are not.. let’s say “used” during the other months. Why?

Take one more example… below is a speech in The Honeymooners by Ralph Kramden, played by Jackie Gleason, speaking to his wife Alice, played by Audrey Meadows, (Yes, we watch The Honeymooners at our house.) To watch, click here: Ralph Kramden’s Christmas Speech

“You know something, sweetheart? Christmas is… well, it’s about the best time of the whole year. When you walk down the streets, even for weeks before Christmas comes, and there’s lights hanging up, green ones and red ones, sometimes there’s snow and everyone’s hustling someplace. But they don’t hustle around Christmas time like they usually do. You know, they’re a little more friendlier… they bump into you, they laugh, and they say, “Pardon me. Merry Christmas,”… especially when it gets real close to Christmas night. Everybody’s walking home; you can hardly hear a sound. Bells are ringin’, kids are singing, the snow is coming down. And boy, what a pleasure it is to think that you’ve got someplace to go to. And that the place that you’re going to, there’s somebody in it that you really love. Someone, you’re nuts about. Merry Christmas.”

I get it; Christmas is one day out of the year. But, what if… we made our hearts live as if it were Christmas all the other days? I get it; feelings (those that are positive and good) are different at Christmas. But what if… our hearts wrapped up those feelings and carried them January – November? I get it; … you can fill in the rest with your own thoughts.

As we move into the middle of December and closer to Christmas day, the more thoughts, feelings, emotions are stirred because it is Christmas time; it might be just because I am getting older. Nonetheless, we would all be better if we celebrated Christmas joy all through the year. In the end, I guess it can boil down to what I have always said, “Just do right by people.”

Live life as if it were Christmas everyday, why not? Merry Christmas everyone. This coming Friday will be the last blog of 2021 and it will be my 2021 Christmas Thoughts Poem…

Go be a great educator and leader today… Our future needs it…
