The Leadership in “Masters of the Air”

We have just finished watching Apple TV’s Masters of the Air series. For those of you who have not watched it, I highly recommend it. The leadership in the show transcends time and different levels of the overall capacity of leadership. As I watched each episode, I thought how much can be used in the education world.

Let me say here that the show is very touching, especially seeing the lives of those who sacrificed and what they went through. Also, it is very humbling. Masters of the Air is a series that dives deep into the essence of leadership; invaluable insights are provided far beyond the battlefield and the arena where it takes place. As educational leaders strive to mold future educators, inspiration and guidance can be found in the characters and narratives of this remarkable show.

Masters of the Air is set during World War II and follows the journey of American bomber crews stationed in England, tasked with executing perilous daylight bombing raids over Nazi-occupied Europe. At its core, the series portrays the essence of effective leadership amidst adversity, showcasing traits such as courage, integrity, empathy, and strategic thinking.

One of the most compelling aspects of leadership highlighted in the series is the importance of leading by example. As we like to say, leadership does not work unless you “Inspect what you expect.” The commanding officers, portrayed with depth and authenticity, demonstrate unwavering resolve and sacrifice, earning the respect and loyalty of their teams through their actions rather than mere words. In education, this translates into educational leaders at all levels embodying the values they seek to instill, fostering a culture of integrity and excellence. It is very difficult for others to model what you are not.

Masters of the Air underscores the significance of clear communication and teamwork in achieving common goals. Each member of the bomber crew plays a crucial role, and success hinges upon their ability to collaborate effectively under pressure. Even more notable is acknowledging the success of communication and teamwork between the Tuskegee Airmen, who brought demographical and cultural differences, and the bomber crews. This alone is a leadership trait that needs to be found more. Success means putting aside self and serving others. Likewise, cultivating a sense of belonging and collaboration among administration, teachers, and students in educational settings is paramount for fostering a conducive learning environment.

Additionally, the series emphasizes the importance of adaptability and resilience in the face of challenges. This might be needed more than ever as education continues to change. As the characters in the show confront adversity, they demonstrate the ability to learn from failures, adjust their strategies, and persevere against all odds. This concept is needed at all levels of education. Too often, we see educational leaders never garnish these first two characteristics. Only the respected, great leaders make it to the third characteristic. This resilience is a vital trait for both leaders and learners alike, enabling them to navigate uncertainty and emerge stronger from setbacks.

Masters of the Air offers a compelling narrative of leadership. By drawing inspiration from the characters and themes of the series, educational leaders can cultivate the future and equip themselves and others with the skills, values, and mindset to tackle the challenges of tomorrow.

When Will Mississippi’s Public Schools Actually Become A Priority Of Our Legislature?

Well, it’s that time of year again, and it’s time to discuss a topic of much contention in the education world. Currently, our Mississippi Legislature is in session, and the idea of using public school funds for vouchers and allowing those public school funds to be used for private schools is being thrown around again. The debate is intensifying, and while proponents argue for the idea of school choice, vouchers, parent’s choice, or whatever you would like to call it, there are significant concerns. Recent years have brought education an uptick with this issue, and the Mississippi Legislature is beginning to grapple with it now, more than ever. Many in the Legislature will argue that these programs will offer parents greater educational options and promote competition among schools. My first question is, why should there be competition among schools if we all want the best for our children and their future? Competition does not need to exist if education is funded fair and equitable. And yet, now we are hearing about the Legislature wanting to scrap MAEP and rewrite it again.

However, as of yesterday morning, The Parent’s Campaign released a statement stating, “Public school supporters are applauding… Senate Education Committee for taking a public stand today in support of a fair and objective school funding formula that represents the true cost of educating a Mississippi student to proficiency in core academic subjects.” You can read that here…Dueling School Funding Plans Draw Praise, Rebuke. I’ll say this with regards to MAEP, either fund what we have fully or find a formula that works for all public schools to benefit fairly with the opportunity to educate fairly. But I digress…

Back to the idea of vouchers…
One of the primary concerns with vouchers in Mississippi is the diversion of every penny needed from public schools. Public schools and educators already face numerous challenges. When those funds are shaved, whittled off, and given to private school institutions, the financial strain only worsens. The ripple effects exacerbate, creating more inequalities and hindering any effort to improve education in geographical areas of the State that need it most.

What about accountability and transparency? What about state standards? Currently, private schools are not subject to the same level of scrutiny that public schools are. What happens if they start receiving funds? Will they be held to the same standards? If they are not, then should this raise concerns about the quality of education provided and if taxpayer dollars are being used effectively? If this happens, the voucher system risks widening the achievement gap even more.

Will having a voucher program really lead to improved academic success? Last year, Arkansas passed its own version of what Mississippi is looking at doing. I will say that every child needs to be afforded an equal opportunity to receive an education. This is what education should be about. However, the negative consequences cannot be ignored. What is the answer? I don’t know, but diverting public funds creates a challenge that will undermine the fundamental principles of equity, accessibility, and accountability for all public schools, especially those that need it the most.

Let’s go fight the good fight of leadership. Someone has to…

Leadership and Warning Labels – What is your message?

When is the last time you read a warning label on a product? Some are quite funny, while others seem plain dumb with the question, “Who would do that anyway?” But nonetheless, they are printed right there on the product (fine print sometimes).

Here are just a few…
A cup of coffee – Caution, content may be hot.
Hairdryer – Do no use while sleeping
Wheelbarrow – Not intended for highway use
Baby Stroller – Remove child before folding
Nyquil – May cause drowsiness

You get the idea. I often wonder who made the particular blunder for that specific warning label?

Segue to leadership…
It is often said that perception is not reality. But can everybody be wrong? A very good friend of mine says, “Everybody can’t be wrong about the same thing.” Perception becomes a way of understanding or interpreting things. At the same time, reality is the state of things as they actually exist rather than as they may be perceived or might be imagined. That said, what if we had a warning label about us for others to see printed right there on the package, that package being us?

Here might be a few…
Warning:
Do not think on your own – I micromanage
Do not disagree with me – I am moody
Do not cause conflict – I am insecure
Do not outshine me – I am passive-aggressive
Do not have a different opinion – I am highly flammable
Please handle with care – I get my feelings hurt easily
Be a yes person – If you are not, I will find fault
I’m sure you can add to the list…

How refreshing would it be if these warning labels were reversed?
Warning:
Think on your own – I delegate
It’s ok to disagree with me – Does not mean that you are wrong
Sometimes there will be conflict – I will not run from it, and I will support you
Outshine me – The better you are, the better we are
Have a different opinion – I encourage diverse thinking
Please handle with honesty – I will not get my feelings hurt easily
Do not be a yes person – I do not want minions around me

However, I believe the leadership we lead with does carry labels. You might say, “Well, that’s not how I lead,” or “I don’t care what someone else thinks.” But at the same time, we would quickly say that’s not the reputation we want. Well, is everyone wrong, then?

What are you doing to ensure that you have positive leadership labels instead of warning labels? In the end, we are all wearing some type of leadership label. The question is, what does your leadership label say about you?

Dr. Seuss, Oh the places you will continue to go…

Oh, the places you would let me go,
But read you no more I can.
See, Dr. Suess, some of your books are under a ban.

Why? We do not know.
For you have taught us to use our minds,
I guess that is why it is so.

From the Lorax to Green Eggs and Ham,
Your books have caught our imaginations.
You taught us to read and introduced us to Sam-I-Am.

The Cat, Sally and the Fish,
Characters who are adored.
Thing 1, Thing 2… never kept us bored.

Too funny and too serious,
Were usually your themes.
Now, they are becoming social media’s memes.

Why is there a ban, you ask?
Well, it’s because of the Grinch, I guess.
He gets all the blame.

Now, as we “Read Across America,”
We have fewer of your books to choose.
It will not be the same.

Your books offer for us to be ourselves,
To make the world a better place,
To love, have joy, and be friends.

Yes, Dr. Suess, you have taught us to use our brains in our heads.
And walk where we want to with our feet in our shoes.
Most importantly, to walk in any direction we choose.

But some bring thunderstorms and rain.
To drown your books,
Right into the drain.

As I grow older,
Memories grow fonder.
Of laps being sat in and read to of Horton Hears a Who.

Dr. Seuss, I am a fan.
I will read your books.
Even the ones who others ban.
