Perspective for a New Year: Reflections from The Family Circus

The older I get, the more sentimental I become. I’ve always had a touch of it, but time has a way of deepening emotions and sharpening memories. I love Christmas, and I often tell Heather how happily sad I feel when we wake up on December 26th. The celebration has passed, the house is quieter, and the season officially closes. Still, life moves forward, and that particular Christmas becomes a memory, one we carry with us into the next days.

This past weekend, January 4, 2026, The Family Circus comic, created by Bil Keane and now drawn by his son, Jeff Keane, offered, I believe, a quiet but powerful reminder about perspective that feels especially relevant for educators as we begin a new year.

In the comic, Bil, the father, drags a discarded Christmas tree to the curb. The needles are falling, the task is inconvenient, and the season is clearly over. But the perspective that matters most is not Bil’s, it belongs to the tree. Floating above the scene are the tree’s memories: being chosen by the family, decorated with care, surrounded by laughter, and standing proudly as the centerpiece of shared joy. From the tree’s point of view, its purpose was fulfilled. It mattered. It brought people together.

The same object, the tree, represents both burden and beauty, depending entirely on perspective.

As educators step into a new year, we often carry a similar mix of hope, exhaustion, and resolve. New initiatives, new students, new expectations, and all the old that carries over, arrive again, all at once. In the middle of that swirl, leadership can feel like carrying something heavy, important, but awkward, tiring, and often unseen by others.

Educational leadership is much the same.

By January, many school leaders are focused on what feels like the “tree at the curb” moment… budget constraints, staffing shortages, test data, compliance tasks, initiatives that didn’t go as planned, and teachers taking days off and subs (or no subs) are in the building. These realities are real, and ignoring them helps no one. But leadership grounded only in problems can unintentionally crush the spirit, our own and that of the people we serve.

Perspective does not deny difficulty; it reframes it.

For educators, perspective means remembering that today’s challenges are often the byproduct of earlier successes. A growing program brings complexity. High expectations signal trust. Accountability exists because what happens in schools matters deeply. When leaders help their teams reconnect daily work to its deeper purpose… student growth, belonging, and opportunity, the weight feels different. The same task, seen through a different lens, becomes meaningful rather than merely exhausting.

Perspective is also a leadership responsibility. Teachers and staff often take cues from how leaders interpret reality. When leaders consistently highlight only what is broken, people shrink. When leaders balance honesty with hope, naming challenges while also lifting up moments of impact, people lean in. They remember why they chose this profession in the first place.

As the new year begins, effective leaders might ask themselves a few grounding questions:

  • What am I carrying that feels heavy right now, and what meaning is attached to it?
  • What moments of success or connection am I overlooking because I’m focused on what’s next?
  • How can I help others see the story behind the work, not just the work itself?

The Family Circus comic reminds us that perspective is often invisible unless we choose to notice it. If the tree could think (and we read that it is), it wouldn’t see itself as discarded, it would remember the joy it helped create. Educators, too, may feel worn down at this point in the year. Yet memories can be made in our buildings every day… the learning, the laughter, the growth, are reasons the work educators do matters, and those small victories can lead to big wins.

As we step into a new year, may we lead with eyes wide enough to see both the burden and the beauty, and help others see it too.

Leading with Intensity or Intentionality… Which One?

We see it almost every game in the world of sports… One word, intensity. On the other hand, we see the opposite, a stoicism of intentionality. As a former basketball coach, I get it… the need to motivate, fuss, correct, celebrate, etc. However, I became a better coach when I tapered off those moments of intensity. One of my coaching mentors, Stan Jones, told me once, “If you fuss and holler all the time, when you actually need to, the players will not know the difference.” I would give that same advice to young coaches now. I would also give it to all those at any leadership level.

In leadership, the allure of leading with intensity is often strong. We live in a fast-paced world where results are expected quickly, and leaders usually feel pressured to drive people hard, pushing toward ambitious goals and maintaining relentless focus on outcomes. However, while it can achieve short-term gains, leading with intensity often leads to burnout, poor decision-making, and a gradual erosion of a positive culture over time. Every leader should be aware of these negative characteristics.

Leading with intentionality offers a more sustainable and effective approach. Think of it as a natural resource. When leaders are intentional, they focus on achieving goals and how those goals are pursued. Intentional leaders lead with clarity of purpose, ensuring that every decision aligns with the broader mission and values that determine who they are and who the organization is. Rather than pushing with an intensity of negativity and possible belittlement, intentional leaders take a step back to ensure engagement, support, and empowering others to become the standard. Intentional leadership prioritizes the why behind our actions rather than just the how or what, inspiring a sense of purpose and motivation. This fosters a culture of trust and collaboration, seeking results and holistic growth, encouraging personal development, and an opportunity for people to flourish.

While intensity might fuel a leader in moments of crisis or during short bursts of effort, I do not believe it should be a defining style. Leaders who consistently lead with intensity often need to catch up on the nuances that lead to lasting success. Intentionality, however, brings balance, purpose, and foresight, ensuring that both the leader and their team can sustain high performance over time. It would almost allow others to believe you are clairvoyant… 🙂 

From a Christian Worldview perspective, leading intentionally means listening, adapting, and seeking God’s wisdom in decision-making. This doesn’t necessarily mean waiting for divine intervention but rather using the principles and values found in the Bible to guide your leadership. Leadership rooted in intentionality reflects the servant-leader model of Christ, one that brings glory to God and leaves a lasting impact on the hearts of those we serve.

In the end, it’s not about how loudly or forcefully you lead; it’s about how wisely you guide others toward a shared vision. I have seen and been around many leaders of both styles and there is a drastic difference.

Who do you want leading… A leader who leads by choice or chance?

Leadership, call it what you want, but hopefully, you can agree that it is and will continue to be a journey. It demands conscious effort, a vision that is not blinded by self, and a deep understanding of who we are individually…

So, today’s discussion compares and contrasts leading by choice vs. leading by chance. Too many times I see people who are in leadership positions who have earned their way there or thrown into the position. Is there a difference? I believe so, and by the end of reading, hopefully you will discover which is better and why…

Leading by choice…
They are the leaders who embrace responsibilities and challenges with clarity and purpose. Driven by the desire to be a difference-maker for the good of others, inspiring and creating positive change because it is the right thing to do, not because they just think it will be better. They uphold deliberate leadership that is informed and backed for growth for all they lead. They constantly look to refine their leadership, learning from truth without blinders and adapting to challenges. Leading by choice is intentional and fosters trust, collaboration, and a shared vision. They believe in others and understand the impact of aligning actions with values for all to see.

Leading by chance…
They lack the intrinsic motivation required to truly succeed in it for themselves and lack preparedness. They lead from the hip, often finding themselves in leadership positions due to circumstance or out of necessity, without an actual desire to lead. This type of leadership becomes reactive rather than proactive. Purpose and direction lack consistency in decision-making, and opportunities for growth are missed. They struggle to connect on any level and only want loyalty and engagement that benefits a self-sense of purpose. This creates a hollow leadership that causes disengagement and a lack of cohesion.

From a Christian worldview, this aligns with the idea of servant leadership, all day, every day. Such leaders by choice are better equipped to serve others selflessly, making decisions that reflect wisdom and love, embodying the essence of servant leadership that transforms integrity and conviction in and for others.

We see it every day… Those who lead by choice and those who have to lead by chance. One allows you to succeed; the other, well, they give you a chance. You might ask, “Are opportunity and chance the same thing?” I say no. Ultimately, leaders who lead by choice are more effective because they approach leadership with a passion that spills over and over into the lives of others.

Pressure Is Opportunity

While watching ESPN College Game Day at the Cotton Bowl for the “Red River Rivalry” between Oklahoma and Texas this past Saturday morning, Brent Venables, Oklahoma’s head coach, was interviewed. During the interview, one statement he made stood out. When asked how he and his players felt about being the underdog and not picked to win, he stated, “Pressure is opportunity.” I looked at Breana and said, “There’s my blog for next week.”

We often hear phrases such as…
They can’t handle the pressure…
They were under a lot of pressure…
Subjected to pressure…
Peer pressure…
Under pressure…

All of these have a negative connotation. Pressure is often associated with stress and discomfort. When was the last time we heard about pressure being on the positive side?

Leadership will always have pressure situations, making it a natural component. How we view those pressure situations will determine our leadership mindset. Deadlines, critical decisions, crises, etc… these situational moments allow for resilience, adaptability, and maybe even ingenuity to be seen.

Leadership has only two options when confronted with pressure. Seize the moment and showcase capability, or don’t. However, it’s always an opportunity. It takes little time for true leadership to emerge.

Think about it this way: pressure is movement. It either pushes or pulls.
In essence, it’s force. An often heard quote, “A diamond is a hunk of coal that made good under pressure.” Even though this is untrue, the metaphor is good. As a leader, we all have what our perceived limits are. Will we make good under pressure?

As a result, pressure always forces change. We are where we are, adapting to the given environment and continuing to succeed or deteriorating under pressure. Suppose leaders adopt the mentality that pressure encourages personal growth and achievement; then, experiences create memory moments that help forge future opportunities, teaching invaluable lessons and ultimately shaping their character and competence.

You want to be a quality leader? Reframe how you look at pressure. Unlock the potential that pressure offers. Empower yourself and embrace the opportunity.
