Teachers Need a Spring Break Like…

Teachers need spring break like a fish needs water,
Like a bird needs a nest to rest,
Like the internet needs to work in the middle of an online test.

By March, our coffee is just a formality,
Patience as delicate as a Jenga tower being played blindfolded,
Lesson plans are more like “let’s just survive the week” plans.

The copy machine groans when approached,
The dry-erase markers are drier than our humor,
And some are counting how long to retirement.

Teachers have answered the same question for 27 weeks now…
No, the test is not open book,
No, you cannot turn it in late,
No, there is no extra credit.

The inbox is overflowing with “just checking in,”
Papers needing to be graded before the day ends.
The “teacher stare” of “don’t go there with me” is now permanent.

So yes, teachers need spring break like a cactus needs rain,
Like students need to check Snapchat,
Like lunch needs to be more than 20 rushed minutes.

One glorious week of no grading, no emails, no lesson plans, no…
Just sleep, sun, and maybe, just maybe… time to read a book.
A moment of silence before the fourth nine weeks begins.

Happy Spring Break everyone…

As you step into your role today, remember that you are not just an educator and leader but a shaper of the future. Your actions and decisions profoundly impact the lives of those you guide. Go, be the great educator and leader that our future needs.

Remember… Think Leadership and Be For Others…

What Is This Thing Called Spring Break?

In the land of what used to be known as chalk and dust, there lived a group of people called teachers…

Who were in need of laughter and possibly a joke. Weathering storms of tests and quizzes, helping students look for pencils and monitoring the hallways full of fizzles.

Spring break seemed like a distant dream, for all they wanted was for their students to be able to glean.

Most school days started with bags under their eyes, looking out their window (if they had one) at the warmth of the sun and the freedom of the blue skies.

Dreams of the smell of fresh mountain air or beach sand between the toes. Taking them away from Canvas and computers and their endless woes.

No students for a week, no chaos to ensue. No coffee or caffeinated drinks needed to help them scamper and prance. Only thoughts of freedom to dance.

Counting the minutes with a smile, knowing the days left with the countdown, waiting for that fictional pot of gold at the rainbow’s end. They’ve made it through to another break again.

A few last-minute chores before the bell rings Friday at four. Like herding cats to actually beat students out the door. As the final bell rings and the hallways empty, teachers emerge from the dark classroom corners like survivors of a zombie horror lore.

Spring break is here, and it’s time to breathe. Ready to set their minds free. Relaxation and fun are in that order (a few rounds of golf, for sure).

One thing remains certain: teachers are resilient. They can weather any storm, even if it means sacrificing their sanity for the sake of educating others.

So, here’s to all the teachers. The unsung heroes of past, present, and future. Their patience endures all that comes their way. The chaos they manage, knowing it brings out their best every day.

From the land of chalk and dust, they are the ones who inspire, educate, and occasionally indulge… waiting, hoping, in this thing called spring break…

Happy Spring Break, teachers. May it be filled with what you need. Forty-five days remain…

Let’s go fight the good fight of leadership. Someone has to…

Go be a great educator and leader today… Our future needs it…

Remember… Think Leadership and Be For Others…

Sittin’ on the back porch swing…

Well, spring break is here. YES! you say. One of the four weeks in the school year teachers all look forward to and long for…

So, here’s hoping you have a great spring break. Hope you enjoy the rewording of Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay, our Spring Break blog this week… There is one thing I hope you notice, especially if you know the words to Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay. If you remember, there are lines of saying, “wastin’ time.” Well, I’ve changed those to “liven’ time,” because I think that is what we should do, live.

Sittin’ on the Back Porch Swing

Sittin’ on the back porch swing…
I’ll be swingin’ when the evenin’ comes
Watching the grass grow and playing fetch with the dogs
Then I watch ’em get tired and bask in the setting sun

I’m sittin’ on the back porch swing
Thinkin’ of how to spend the day
Walking barefoot in the backyard
Liven’ time

I left my classroom for a week
Headed for nowhere in general
‘Cause I’ve no agenda to speak
I don’t want nothin to come my way

So I’m just gon’ sittin’ on the back porch swing
Feelin’ the morning and afternoon breeze
I’m sittin’ on the back porch swing, liven’ time

A whole week of nothin’s gonna change
A week from this Monday, still remains the same
I’ve got nine more weeks
So I guess I’ll see it through

Sittin’ here restin’ my bones
I’ve got those around I love
Everyone else can leave me alone
Just to make this back porch swing my home

Now I’m just gon’ sit, on this back porch swing
Watchin’ golf and March Madness on the TV
Sittin’ on the back porch swing
Liven’ time

Let’s go fight the good fight of leadership. Someone has to…

Go be a great educator and leader today… Our future needs it…

Remember… Think Leadership and Be For Others…

Happy Spring Break…

11 Friday Mar 2022

I hope everyone has a wonderful spring break…

Twas the night before Saturday of Spring Break Week,
Teachers were waiting throughout the school for the final bell.
Nine weeks tests were graded and finalized,
In hopes that they equated with PowerSchool.

Students were mentally checked out after their tests,
Visions of no work for a solid week ahead.
Teachers getting ready for the next Monday return,
Breathed a sigh of relief, the third nine weeks done.

When out in the parking lot, teachers exiting left and right,
NASCAR it seemed, with tires squealing…
I walked to my truck, a pep in my step,
Knowing that a week of golf was in store for me.

Sunshine and warmth,
A gentle breeze for all to enjoy.
Beach vacations for some,
Others, a staycation to restore.

Gas prices keeping many at home,
Spring cleaning will literally be a chore.
A lunch longer than twenty minutes, YES!
Maybe even a midday nap with a snore..

Wednesday’s noon chimes on the clock,
Downhill it now comes.
Back to school in four days,
Our spring break coming to an end.

Then, with a twinkling, I said,
Forty-five more days, I’ve got this.
Easter break is real soon,
Yes, the SON does rise.

And I thought to myself,
What a wonderful job as an educator I have.
A chance to shape the future,
To help better a student’s mind.

But nonetheless, a spring break we all need.
Giving a goodbye nod to the school,
For a week to ourselves…
Before we make the return into the final leg.

As I drove out of the parking lot,
I rolled down my windows and exclaimed,
“Spring break is here, now…
when are the Mississippi legislatures going to give us a pay raise?”

Happy spring break to all, and to all restful week.

Go be a great educator and leader today… Our future needs it…

Remember… Think Leadership and Be For Others…
