Theological Thoughts about Leaders and Leadership…

This blog post is something that I have been thinking about for some time… even before the recent election. I have many conversations with myself… go figure. One question I often ask myself is, “How did so and so a person get that job?” or “Why was that person selected for that role?” As Christians, one of our greatest witnessing tools is ourselves; we are on public display 24/7. Regardless of those in authority and leadership positions in general, I am comforted that I serve a God in total control…

In the aftermath of any election or a new leadership change, emotions can run high. We see it on TV, hear it on the radio, podcasts, etc. I’ve been on both sides of this with many elections thus far since my time voting. A winning majority often feels relief, and the other half is disappointed, and vice versa; prayers are answered and unanswered, it seems. However, as a Christian, there’s a theological truth I find confidence in that offers profound peace in times of political change and any change of leadership at any level, for that matter… God is sovereign, controlling the entire universe, and knows what is best. Romans 8:28 states, “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” All things are all things and do not adhere to any categories. This concept of sovereignty means that God rules over all creation, history, and human affairs, including elections and those in leadership. Regardless of the outcome, as Christians, we can trust that nothing happens outside His knowledge and purpose.

In Scripture, we see that God’s will unfolds in two ways: His revealed will and His secret will. Deuteronomy 29:29 states, “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.” God’s revealed will consists of the principles and commands He has given us through Scripture… directives for living lives of integrity, justice, and love. His secret will, however, includes those things He has chosen not to disclose fully to us, such as specific plans for nations or why particular leaders rise and fall. Though we may not understand why God allows certain leaders to come into power, we can trust that His secret will is at work for His glory and, ultimately, for the good of those who love Him. What Scripture is silent on, it is silent. This foundational belief reassures us that no leader or election result surprises Him. His purposes are ultimately beyond our understanding, yet they always serve a greater good and work according to His divine plan. This is indeed a mystery.

The Bible teaches us in Daniel 2:21a that “He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings.” This verse reminds us that the authority of every leader is granted by God Himself. Whether we support a person in leadership or not, we can trust that God has a purpose for the leadership in place and that His wisdom far exceeds our own. One clear command in God’s revealed will is that we are to pray for our leaders. Paul writes in 1 Timothy 2:1-2, “First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.” Oh, how hard this often seems and actually is. Whether or not we agree with those in office or even in any leadership position, praying for wisdom, justice, and guidance for our leaders aligns our hearts with God’s purposes and keeps us rooted in humility.

As we move forward and live daily, I find comfort in God’s sovereignty, praying for our leaders in authority and trusting that God’s plans, though sometimes hidden, knowing that they are always good and perfect. At the same time, as leaders, we have a responsibility to foster unity and peace, and lead with wisdom, justice, and compassion.

As you step into your role today, remember that you are not just an educator and leader but a shaper of the future. Your actions and decisions profoundly impact the lives of those you guide. Go, be the great educator and leader that our future needs.

A Leadership of Convenience is Inconvenient for Everyone

Every morning, driving to school, I listen to the Wall Street Journal Report. I like being aware of what is going on in the world… Often, they have a report from MarketWatch, and yesterday’s report caught my attention. The piece is titled, Here’s why more Americans than ever now shop at Amazon (please note, this is not an endorsement of Amazon, but I do love Amazon). In the article, this statement was made, “Analysts and others note that Amazon’s success when it comes to selling household goods is rooted in three key factors: selection, pricing, and speed of delivery.”

As you have often heard me say, “It got me to thinking.” However, I’m going to encompass all three of the above factors with the thought of convenience. All in all, Amazon has a wide selection range, their prices are competitive, and the delivery speed is usually two days or less with Prime membership. As consumers, we place a significant amount of trust in the companies we buy from. This trust is not just about the products we purchase but also about the convenience these companies offer as a byproduct of that trust. The importance of trust in consumer relationships is a key element that parallels the role of trust in effective leadership. No one cares for the convenience of a product if trust is not gained or there to begin with.

However, when it comes to leadership…

Leadership is a demanding responsibility that requires consistency, commitment, and a clear vision. I would think everyone can agree on that. Leadership of convenience, where decisions are made based on ease, comfort, short-term gain, or not knowing background or context, often misses the mark for true, lasting effectiveness. At its core, this approach prioritizes what is expedient over what is right, creating a leadership style that is reactionary, inconsistent, and unsustainable. The role of trust in leadership is paramount, as leaders who choose convenience over principle may win momentary victories but fail to build the trust, respect, and long-term success that real leadership requires.

Leadership should not be about self-interest or personal comfort, but often, we see it established in weak leadership. It’s about serving others and doing what is right by them, even when it’s tough, costly, or unpopular. Effective leadership demands sacrifice, putting the needs of others first, even when it’s inconvenient. The need for sacrifice in effective leadership is a key aspect that leaders must understand, as by only engaging when it’s comfortable, leaders signal that they are not invested in long-term success. This weight of leadership responsibility should be felt by every leader.

Leaders driven by convenience often lack vision and fail to inspire. When choices are made based on what is easy or comfortable rather than what aligns with core values or long-term goals, followers become disengaged and confused. 

True leadership embraces responsibility over comfort every day that ends in “y.” It requires courage to stand firm in one’s values and convictions, even when inconvenient. Leadership prioritizing conviction over convenience creates real change built on a foundation of integrity and is foundational to leadership. Without it, credibility crumbles like the façade a leader has created.

And with all of this, the speed of trust at which you can make true leadership happen as a leader speaks volumes about your leadership style and the characteristics you base your leadership on. Just don’t make it one of convenience.

The leadership world as we know it is rapidly evolving, with everyone trying to come up with some new leadership tagline… I’m guilty as well. It’s all about trying to get the reader interested enough to read…

So… Is there a difference between truth-value leadership and truth-claims leaderhsip? Stay with me…

The concept of truth-value leadership…

Truth-value leadership is of immense importance. Why would it not be? It’s more than leading with integrity (remember, if you have to ask someone if you have integrity, odds are you don’t); it’s embodying and living out the essence of integrity, honesty, transparency, authenticity (you can keep adding to the list)…

Truth-value in leadership has seeds planted and roots established in fostering trust, inspiring loyalty, and building relationships with a substance that lasts. It starts with self-awareness, prioritizing honesty within themselves before they can expect honesty from others. A stand-firmness characteristic that doesn’t shy away from difficult truths or uncomfortable situations. It is not passive or even passive-aggressive and sure doesn’t send someone else to “handle” issues. They deliver facts, stay away from public opinion, and just plain do right by people. When this happens, people engage in an encouraging environment, knowing leadership truth values are the guiding principles.

However, truth-claims leadership…

Have you ever seen a leader when it comes to truth, veer from reality? Many leaders assert and claim they embody truth leadership without aligning their actions with their words (This is where my daughter would say, “PERIOD!”). I call this a credibility gap; all it does is lead to skepticism among followers. Empty claims lead to hollow voices that can erode trust, often causing reputational harm to others in order to make truth claims leaders look all the better.

For all who chase leadership, truth-value leadership is profound. Leaders who live by their values and are accountable to truth, benefit everyone in trusting decision-making, and true loyalty follows. The tell-tale true test of a truth-value leader lies in their consistency—how often their claims match their actions. Truth-value leadership is, therefore, not just a moral or ethical stance; it is a strategic approach to sustainable success. Truth-value leadership offers a powerful path toward lasting influence and impact in a world craving authenticity.

Who do you want leading… A leader who leads by choice or chance?

Leadership, call it what you want, but hopefully, you can agree that it is and will continue to be a journey. It demands conscious effort, a vision that is not blinded by self, and a deep understanding of who we are individually…

So, today’s discussion compares and contrasts leading by choice vs. leading by chance. Too many times I see people who are in leadership positions who have earned their way there or thrown into the position. Is there a difference? I believe so, and by the end of reading, hopefully you will discover which is better and why…

Leading by choice…
They are the leaders who embrace responsibilities and challenges with clarity and purpose. Driven by the desire to be a difference-maker for the good of others, inspiring and creating positive change because it is the right thing to do, not because they just think it will be better. They uphold deliberate leadership that is informed and backed for growth for all they lead. They constantly look to refine their leadership, learning from truth without blinders and adapting to challenges. Leading by choice is intentional and fosters trust, collaboration, and a shared vision. They believe in others and understand the impact of aligning actions with values for all to see.

Leading by chance…
They lack the intrinsic motivation required to truly succeed in it for themselves and lack preparedness. They lead from the hip, often finding themselves in leadership positions due to circumstance or out of necessity, without an actual desire to lead. This type of leadership becomes reactive rather than proactive. Purpose and direction lack consistency in decision-making, and opportunities for growth are missed. They struggle to connect on any level and only want loyalty and engagement that benefits a self-sense of purpose. This creates a hollow leadership that causes disengagement and a lack of cohesion.

From a Christian worldview, this aligns with the idea of servant leadership, all day, every day. Such leaders by choice are better equipped to serve others selflessly, making decisions that reflect wisdom and love, embodying the essence of servant leadership that transforms integrity and conviction in and for others.

We see it every day… Those who lead by choice and those who have to lead by chance. One allows you to succeed; the other, well, they give you a chance. You might ask, “Are opportunity and chance the same thing?” I say no. Ultimately, leaders who lead by choice are more effective because they approach leadership with a passion that spills over and over into the lives of others.
