The Lost Art of Writing Thank You Notes…

In a world dominated by how people communicate… quick texts and emojis, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, or if you are hanging on to your MySpace account, the timeless art of writing thank-you notes often feels like a relic of the past. Yes, I’m old school in many ways, but many things in life are timeless… some things just need to be practiced and maintained. Yet, the simple gesture of writing a thank you note carries profound meaning, connecting us to others in ways technology cannot replicate.

Many will say, “Thank you” upon receiving a gift, and that should be the correct response. However, a “thank you” is also a default response because it seems natural to say. Many people would say this is enough. Others will say that the recipient of a thank you note will just read it and throw it away. However, I believe these are misconceptions. Writing a thank-you note is not about the recipient’s reaction. It’s about the act of expressing your thoughtfulness and acknowledging the other person, which is always worthwhile. I guess my question is, “Why would you not?”

Here’s why I believe reviving and writing thank-you notes is worth the effort, focusing on their personal touch, intentionality, expression of gratitude, and reflection of maturity.

Personal

A handwritten thank-you note is deeply personal; it is a reflection of you. Unlike generic messages or templates, it requires your time and thoughtfulness. The process of selecting stationery, coming up with the right words, and addressing the recipient shows you value the relationship. A thank you note may stir something and resonate emotionally, letting the recipient know they’re appreciated. You might not ever know what it will mean…

Intentional

Writing a thank-you note is an intentional act. It requires slowing down to reflect on what and why you are thankful for and how to express it meaningfully. This intentional approach goes against almost everything our digitized minds use with the instant gratification of modern communication. A thank-you note says, “I took the time to think about you,” which leaves a lasting impression.

Shows gratitude

At its heart, a thank-you note is a tangible carrier for gratitude. It conveys appreciation. Why? Normally, positive thought, effort, or care is behind a gift or gesture that someone gives. I believe this expression strengthens relationships, as it acknowledges and celebrates the kindness of others.

Maturity

Do not diminish this fact… Writing a thank-you note demonstrates an emotional maturity factor. It shows you understand the importance of recognizing others’ contributions and are willing to invest effort in maintaining meaningful connections. It’s a skill that transcends etiquette, reflecting character and integrity.

As I try to wrap my thoughts around which of the four is the most important…, I guess all four are needed to square the circle… Regardless, reviving the art of thank-you notes can transform relationships. It can bring warmth to a person and possibly to a world that often feels impersonal. As we know, too many people hide behind keyboards anyway…

Since we are coming out of the Christmas and holiday season, I reckon there has to be someone you can extend a thank you note to. All it takes is one note… A few heartfelt words on paper might seem small, but they carry immense power to foster connection and gratitude. To use the SEC words, “It just means more.”

As you step into your role today, remember that you are not just an educator and leader but a shaper of the future. Your actions and decisions profoundly impact the lives of those you guide. Go, be the great educator and leader that our future needs.

Seeking a Thrill in Leadership? It’s Scary…

With yesterday being October 31st and Halloween. Many people dressed and wanted to create a scare and possibly a thrill. A purposeful thought, nonetheless, reasoned for whatever. But here’s a thought: do we ever wonder if those who seek a thrill actually scare people?

I believe it happens more than we realize in leadership every day…

At its core, leadership is about responsibility and should not be thrill-seeking. When individuals chase, want, and advocate for leadership roles for the excitement or the ego boost, it often leads to dangerous outcomes. Most of the time, that danger is hidden. Leadership is not inherently glamorous; it comes with pressures, accountability, and the weight of guiding others toward shared goals; this in itself should humbly scare. However, when leaders pursue the role for excitement or a desire to be in control, it can lead to impulsive behaviors that make decision-making and risk-taking harmful to any established positive culture. This is a danger we must be cautious of.

True leaders (and it’s unfortunate that we have to put “true” in front of leader(s)) find satisfaction not in the thrill of power but in fostering growth mindsets, collaboration, and positive change. Leadership requires vision, patience, and sometimes empathy; all of which can be diminished when someone is drawn to leadership simply for the excitement it provides. Thrill-seeking leaders may overlook key processes, undervalue teamwork, and make decisions that prioritize short-term excitement over long-term success, especially if it benefits them first.

Leadership is ultimately about being a servant and then empowering others. Leaders are entrusted with the well-being, development, and performance of those they guide. When leadership becomes a pursuit for personal excitement, it creates a disconnect between the mission and vision and from the needs of those who provide for the stability of the culture. Leaders who approach their roles with a sense of duty and responsibility rather than thrill-seeking inspire trust, loyalty, and respect.

Leadership is also a stewardship given by God. An opportunity to influence others in a way that reflects His character. A servant-based approach turns the pursuit of leadership upside down, challenging a thrill-seeker to let go of personal ambition and instead focus on uplifting others. The excitement in leadership should come from seeing positive transformation and growth in those we serve, not from the prestige of the position.

Should we be scared by those seeking a thrill in leadership? I say yes. Thrill seekers who obtain leadership positions are more than likely wearing a mask anyway. Seems fitting since yesterday was Halloween…

As you step into your role today, remember that you are not just an educator and leader but a shaper of the future. Your actions and decisions profoundly impact the lives of those you guide. Go, be the great educator and leader that our future needs.

A Leadership of Convenience is Inconvenient for Everyone

Every morning, driving to school, I listen to the Wall Street Journal Report. I like being aware of what is going on in the world… Often, they have a report from MarketWatch, and yesterday’s report caught my attention. The piece is titled, Here’s why more Americans than ever now shop at Amazon (please note, this is not an endorsement of Amazon, but I do love Amazon). In the article, this statement was made, “Analysts and others note that Amazon’s success when it comes to selling household goods is rooted in three key factors: selection, pricing, and speed of delivery.”

As you have often heard me say, “It got me to thinking.” However, I’m going to encompass all three of the above factors with the thought of convenience. All in all, Amazon has a wide selection range, their prices are competitive, and the delivery speed is usually two days or less with Prime membership. As consumers, we place a significant amount of trust in the companies we buy from. This trust is not just about the products we purchase but also about the convenience these companies offer as a byproduct of that trust. The importance of trust in consumer relationships is a key element that parallels the role of trust in effective leadership. No one cares for the convenience of a product if trust is not gained or there to begin with.

However, when it comes to leadership…

Leadership is a demanding responsibility that requires consistency, commitment, and a clear vision. I would think everyone can agree on that. Leadership of convenience, where decisions are made based on ease, comfort, short-term gain, or not knowing background or context, often misses the mark for true, lasting effectiveness. At its core, this approach prioritizes what is expedient over what is right, creating a leadership style that is reactionary, inconsistent, and unsustainable. The role of trust in leadership is paramount, as leaders who choose convenience over principle may win momentary victories but fail to build the trust, respect, and long-term success that real leadership requires.

Leadership should not be about self-interest or personal comfort, but often, we see it established in weak leadership. It’s about serving others and doing what is right by them, even when it’s tough, costly, or unpopular. Effective leadership demands sacrifice, putting the needs of others first, even when it’s inconvenient. The need for sacrifice in effective leadership is a key aspect that leaders must understand, as by only engaging when it’s comfortable, leaders signal that they are not invested in long-term success. This weight of leadership responsibility should be felt by every leader.

Leaders driven by convenience often lack vision and fail to inspire. When choices are made based on what is easy or comfortable rather than what aligns with core values or long-term goals, followers become disengaged and confused. 

True leadership embraces responsibility over comfort every day that ends in “y.” It requires courage to stand firm in one’s values and convictions, even when inconvenient. Leadership prioritizing conviction over convenience creates real change built on a foundation of integrity and is foundational to leadership. Without it, credibility crumbles like the façade a leader has created.

And with all of this, the speed of trust at which you can make true leadership happen as a leader speaks volumes about your leadership style and the characteristics you base your leadership on. Just don’t make it one of convenience. 

Go be a great educator and leader today… Our future needs it…

One size fits all? Not in education, especially when force-feeding a student how they should learn…

Have you ever seen the clothing tag, one size fits all? Well, there are some “all” that it doesn’t fit. I see it a lot in caps with the adjustable back strap. Do they know the size of people’s heads when they sew that tag? Since they are more than likely being mass-produced, I would say no.

Do we educate with a one-size-fits-all approach? I would argue that we do. But is this truly effective? Your exceptional teachers know how to tailor their teaching to each student, while many others simply follow a standard curriculum which offers a cookie-cutter approach. This approach, however, fails to account for each student’s unique learning styles and needs.

Every student has their own unique way of absorbing, processing, reflecting, and applying information. Effective educational leadership acknowledges and embraces these differences. My good friend, Dr. Nason Lollar, and I have some really good educational conversations (and we have most of the answers…). Anyway, the other day, we were discussing how “best practices” exist for educators, so I asked rhetorically, “Why don’t we actually use them?” His response, “Exactly!” And the answer we came up with was… The key is creating an environment where students can learn the way they do best, increasing their confidence and potential.

So, I have three thoughts.

Let’s embrace learning styles…

If students have diverse learning styles, why do we not embrace those? Some are visual learners, others auditory, kinesthetic, or a mixed bag of different styles. As educational leaders, we must ensure that the curriculum and the way we teach are flexible enough to cater to these differences and provide a variety of teaching methods that speak to each student’s strengths. I can remember teachers telling me, “You must have this kind of notebook, you must write in a pen, you must have…, etc.” If the end goal is to have students learn and apply that learning, then let’s let them learn the best way they know how.

Why is personalized learning important?

Personalized learning is more than just an educational buzzword. I believe it is more of a philosophy that encourages educators to recognize and respect each student’s individuality. I can hear some teacher out there saying, “That would be so many different lesson plans.” No, it doesn’t have to be that way. The teacher teaches by offering multiple avenues to understanding the material. Some students prefer working independently, while others do their best in collaborative group settings. And by the way, what the world calls collaboration, education calls cheating. Allowing students to choose how they learn and express their knowledge can lead to better engagement and deeper understanding.

Encourages autonomy and responsibility…

When students are allowed to learn in ways that suit them best, they grasp the material more effectively, develop an innate connection to the material, and hopefully take more responsibility for their education. This promotes lifelong learning and self-awareness—skills that go far beyond the classroom, and we really cannot start this concept too early.

By doing so, we empower students to take charge of their learning journey and succeed on their own terms. In education, a one-size-fits-all approach to learning simply doesn’t work. No one enjoys being force-fed.
